Aït Benhaddou is a fortified village (known as a cathar in North African Arabic). It was situated on the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco.
Vistors to the site cross the Ounila River and walk through narrow alley ways that meander up to the summit of the hill on which it was built. Here you see breath taking views over the valley and towns below.
The village retains much of its ancient character and it is not difficult to imagine you are still in a medieval caravanvasi village.
Most of its citizens live in modern houses in on the other side of the river, although there are four families still living in the ancient village.
Inside the walls of the ksar are half a dozen kasbahs, or merchants' houses.
Ksar Aït Benhaddou is a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Several Movies have been made in the village including:
The Gladiator (2000)
The Sheltering Sky (1990)
The Man Who Would be King (1975)
Alexander (2004)
Queen of the Dester (2015)
The Jewel of the Nile (1985)
