Fes is one of the most incredible places on earth.

Founded in 780, it’s known for being the best-preserved ancient city in the Arab world. Traveling here is like taking a trip back in time. Walking through the narrow streets is a journey beyond my senses.

FES, MOROCCO - 1/2 Day Tour (BAD Travel Day)

We arrived in Fes having had planned for lots of time to walk around the Medina. However, our Riad had tried to scam us by not buying our bus tickets to Chefchaouen as we had agreed upon. Instead, they offered me tours since there was no way to make it.

I ended up spending several hours running around all over the city before finally buying tickets for a local bus for the next day.
Sometimes these things happen and you deal with it as best you can.
Travel to Fes, Morocco. Fes is the oldest and largest medieval city in the world, and a bustling hive of activity. The medina is a must for adventurous travellers – a heady mix of aromas, sounds and sights from the tanneries, spice tubs, carpets, pottery and leather goods.

The Medina is divided up into 2, Fes el Bali (Old Fes) and Fes el Djedid (new Fes). Fes el Bali is the most intriguing to visit, little alleyways threading their way through the lively souks, a cacophony of bargaining, colourful sights, incredible smells and a variety of local people going about their everyday business. It is the heart of Fes and besides the souks, houses many mosques and monuments.

Fes in 5 minutes | Fez Morocco 2019

Fez (Arabic: فاس‎, Berber: Fas, ⴼⴰⵙ, French: Fès) is a city in northern inland Morocco and the capital of the Fas-Meknas administrative region. It is the second largest city in Morocco after Casablanca,[4] with a population of 1.4 million (2014). Located to the northeast of Atlas Mountains, Fez is situated at the crossroad of the important cities of all regions; 206 km (128 mi) from Tangier to the northwest, 246 km (153 mi) from Casablanca, 169 km (105 mi) from Rabat to the west, and 387 km (240 mi) from Marrakesh to the southwest which leads to the Trans-Saharan trade route. It is surrounded by the high grounds, and the old city is penetrated by the River of Fez flowing from the west to east.

Fez was founded under the Idrisid rule during the 8th-9th century. It consisted of two autonomous and competing settlements. The migration of 2000 Arab families in the early 9th century gave the nascent city its Arabic character. After the downfall of the Idrisid dynasty, several empires came and went until the 11th century when the Almoravid Sultan Yusuf ibn Tashfin united the two settlements and rebuilt the city, which became today's Fes el Bali quarter. Under the Almoravid rule, the city gained the reputation for the religious scholarship and the mercantile activity. Fez was expanded during the Almohad rule and became the largest city in the world during 1170-1180 with the estimated population of 200,000.

Fez reached its zenith in the Marinid-era, regaining the status as the capital. Numerous madrasas, mosques, zawiyas and city gates were constructed which survived up until today. These buildings are considered the hallmarks of Moorish and Moroccan architectural styles. Marinid sultans also founded Fes Jdid quarter, where newer palaces and gardens were established. During this time, the Jewish population of the city grew as well, with the Mellah (Jewish quarter) attracting the Jewish migrants from other North African regions. After the overthrow of the Marinid dynasty, the city largely declined and replaced by Marrakesh for political and cultural influence, but remained as the capital under the Wattasids and modern Morocco until 1912.

Today, the city largely consists of two old medina quarters, Fes el Bali and Fes Jdid, and modern urban area of Ville Nouvelle constructed during the French colonial era. The medina of Fez is listed as a World Heritage Site and is believed to be one of the world's largest urban pedestrian zones (car-free areas).[5] It has the University of Al Quaraouiyine which was founded in 859 and the oldest continuously functioning university in the world. It also has Chouara Tannery from the 11th century, one of the oldest tanneries in the world. The city has been called the "Mecca of the West" and the "Athens of Africa," a nickname it shares with Cyrene in Libya.

FES - MOROCCO - The world's biggest medina

After a few good hours on train and some interesting things that we encountered on the way we have finally arrived to Fes to the Blue gate.

While we were on the train a gentleman came into our compartment and took a seat without having a ticket for that particular place.

Within no time started talking with us, at first seamed nice, but then it became really annoying. He tried to get our phone number, hotel name so he can pick us up in the morning to take us to his tannery in Fes. He was really pushy to get these information and after trying to sell us leather jackets and other goods, finally gave up and went to another compartment trying to find some other potential customers.

We are walking back and forth on the streets and cant seem to find our riad. Finally we are going into this narrow allay and hoping that we found the place.

Yes, we found it. Such a lovely place, but for now we need to grab some food and rest.

We had a good rest - having a nice breakfast and ready to explore the old town of Fes.

There are two main streets going down the hill in Fes, in both sides you can find the bazaars and on the end of the street the famous tennery of Fes. That's where we are going. It is fascinating to see people working in this place. It smells horrible. They gave us meant leafs to cut down the smell a bit.

The museum of wood crafts.

I have no idea what this stuff is. Looks like cactus and kind of tastes like a kiwi..i dont know...but its good.

Cip is still looking for the perfect Moroccan carpet, but thank God by the end of the day he will even find it.

It is time for a meal and we go again for the Tajin...I kind of miss romanian food at this time, but let's see.

for the starter ordered Moroccan soup and 2nd course My dear friends ordered the classic beef tajing and I went for the Moroccan meatball tajin. Spicy tomato sauce with a fried egg and meatballs.

For dessert we had some interesting croissants and meant tea and orange with cinemon.

The oldest Koranic school in Morocco.

For the rest of the day we are planning to get out of the Medina and go up to the hills of Fes and see the town from there.

the view from the hill is amazing and very relaxing.

We are ending our evening here and our journey to Fes. We decided to go back over night to Marrakesh as the journey back it takes more or less 8 hours. So planning to travel and night and in our final day in Marrakesh to relax.
