Tangier - A Short Documentary

Morocco would be incomplete without the city of Tangier; as it has played a vital role in its history; it is also where Spanish Colonisation's legacies are most prevalent. I visited three of the City’s most prominent tourist destinations namely; The Caves of Hercules, Cape Spartel, and the tomb of Ibn Battuta, it has to be mentioned that there are many more attractions; but these three stand out very boldly. This is a short documentary that I made during the visit.
Street scenes, local people selling goods under the shade of trees in a square. Pack mules. Arched entrance in the fortress walls of the city. View of the Grand Socco minaret. More street scenes with date palms and locals chatting to each other. An animal feed market – bundles of straw being sorted or sold. Another arched entrance through the fortified wall.
Morocco Day Trip from Málaga to Tangier, Part Two | Tangier, Morocco

On the second part of our day trip to Tangier, Morocco from Málaga, Spain, we got a little bit carried away engaging in an important Moroccan cultural tradition: bargaining! We were definitely put in our place as we learned from someone whose job it is to bargain. At least we got a rug out of it?

We also went to a pharmacy where they sold some Moroccan herbs and mixtures. They had saffron, blood cumin, Moroccan oil, Argan oil, and a bunch of others that had very interesting uses. After we managed NOT to buy anything, our guide Mohammed took us to the spot on the northern tip of Africa where the Mediterranean Sea met the Atlantic Sea, and stopped at a sandy spot near Tangier Beach to (watch the other tourists) ride some camels. Our last stop in Morocco was Hercules Cave, an archaeological cave system by the sea.

It was a very full day, and we were exhausted by the time we got back "home" to Málaga. We'd recommend the day trip if what we did piques your interest, but beware that you'll be spending more time travelling and waiting in lines than actually exploring Tangier!

Tangier, the Morocco gate

Tangier is a city located in the extreme north of Morocco, and separated from the European continent by the Strait of Gibraltar. With a population of about one million inhabitants, it is the second commercial city of the country and the main gateway to it.

After the dismantling of the French colony that occupied North Africa until 1912, Tangier was under the joint administration of nine countries, almost all European, and somehow abandoned to its fate. Because of this, until 1956 Tangier became an international city, capital of European and North American bourgeois exile and meeting point of dubious businessmen, smugglers, spies, ruined nobles, russian magnates, jewish millionaires, eccentrics, prostitutes and all kind of opportunists who created a bohemian and libertine lifestyle, attracted by the exotic, cosmopolitan and liberal environment, as well as by the ease of doing business.

If you arrive by sea, the Continental Hotel will welcome you on arrival by boat, a monument to decadence that opened his doors in 1865 and still retains the splendid decoration of its halls, Continental hosted international celebrities such as Pío Baroja , Antoni Gaudí and Winston Churchill.

In the city there is still a certain bohemian air, intellectual and clandestine. In the Cafe de Paris, scene of so many stories that fed the intellectual fame of the city, or Cafe Hafa, that descends in ladder on the cliff of Marshan. From its tables, you can enjoy an unbeatable view of the strait and the Spanish coast.

Strolling through the Petit Socco or sitting unhurriedly at the Café Tinguis watching people pass while sipping a delicious tea is a must. Or tour the 9th of Abril Square, with the famous Cinema Rif, Mosque Sidi Boubaid, or shop around the Central Market and the old Fondouk Chejra, then through the Bab El-Fahs enter the Medina and discover some jewels, such as the tomb of the great traveler Ibn Batouta, the Jeddah Mosque or the Kasbah located at the top. This ancient Kasbah can be accessed from any of the gates: Bab Haha, Bab Kasbah, Bab Al-Assa and Bab Al-Bahr, through which will arrive in alleys to the Mechoir Square, with its Kasbah Mosque, the Kasbah museum and a small tea shop where usually act a group of veteran musicians: "Les fils du détroit".

The city of Tangier in Morocco hosts the 2020 UFAK Senior & Junior Championships. The best karatekas in the continent are set to compete in a memorable event which is scheduled for February 7 to 9.

Nearly 400 athletes from 23 countries are expected to compete in Tangier. The domination of African Karate is at stake at the event. Also, the tournament in Tangier is the last continental championships in Africa before the end of the Olympic qualifying process.

The tournament will take place at the Covered Hall Sport Ziaten. The competition is scheduled to start on Friday, February 7 and will conclude on Sunday, February 9. The last edition of the continental tournament was held last year in Gaborone (Botswana). Egypt and Morocco topped the medal table of the event with eleven gold medals respectively.

The 2020 UFAK Senior & Junior Championships will be another episode in the quest for the prevalence of African karate as the main heroes of the sport in the continent are set to fight for the titles. The new kings and queens of African karate are expected to be crowned in Tangier.
Coucou, tout le monde! In this video, the sixth and final installment of the Morocco vlogs, we’re headed to Tangier. This port city is bustling, vibrant and has beautiful views of the Strait of Gibraltar, which connects the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. We also venture a bit outside the city, closer to the coast, to visit the Caves of Hercules or The Hercules Caves. “The Map of Africa” is a cut-out in the caves that opens to the sea and creates a wonderful, picturesque shot.
