The Sahara Desert is one of the most popular destinations to visit when making a trip to Morocco. During my time in the Sahara I was able to stay with a beautiful Berber family. They treated me and my family so well and I also learned so much about their culture. We had so much fun eating amazing Moroccan food and listening to African Music underneath the stars. Fortunately , I was able to enjoy this experience with my mom and the time that we had was incredible! From the moment we got picked up from the bus drop off, Hassan and Moha showed us the most amazing time! I hope you all enjoy this video and I'm so glad that I get to share my experience with you guys! Thank you!

On the third day of this amazing Morocco trip I am leaving Marrakech and going on a 3 day and 2 night desert trip to Sahara near Merzouga. We will be sleeping in the Sahara camps in tents, following the camel ride. :) Before that though, in this part 1, we are making our way through Atlas mountains, and stopping in some places on the way. One of them is Ait Ben Haddou, an old Moroccan town, now a Unesco World Heritage site, where many famous movied have been shot such as Games of Thrones or Gladiator. Enjoy! :)

Erg Chebbi Merzouga | MOROCCO 2018 | Sahara Desert

One of the most awaited moment of our backpacking trip to Morocco was to our tour from Fez to Merzouga desert in September 2018. Or it can be done the other way round from Marrakech to Merzouga too (12hrs by bus).
We took a Supratours night bus (cost 200dh) at 830pm and arrived the following morning by 715am. Bag storage is allowed for free at the Supratours bus station if you want to go and tour Fez first. There is always a 5dirham charge for each baggage storage in the bus.
We met 2 other travellers from Portugal and made plans to travel together from Merzouga.
There are many other desert tours but we did ours with Mohamad from Riad Desert Camel (00212613604863). Would highly recommend them.
They have other options eg. one day tour or overnight camps etc. They made it one of the best experiences of a lifetime . It cost us 600Dh each and food, drinks , camel ride and camps were all provided.
We started early morning after breakfast and rode camels to base camp 1 . There , we met 4 other travellers from Germany. We had the best time sharing experiences. We did sand boarding, had lunch and then rode on our camels again to go deeper into the desert to camp 2. We reached just in time to climb one of the tallest dunes and watch the beautiful sunset.
Dinner was served and we all danced around the campfire to traditional berber music. Watching the moonrise from the desert background was surreal. The moon seemed so close by and huge.
I never actually imagined that I would be lying on the dunes in the dark someday with 6 other beautiful souls staring at a sky full of stars and witness some shooting stars too. It was just magical and I just could not contain my excitement.
Spending a night in a camp among the dunes of erg Chebbi was once in a lifetime experience for us.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merzouga Travel Guide - Morocco Marvelous Experience

Merzouga is a village in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a 50km long and 5km wide set of sand dunes that reach up to 350m. Most people are here to take a camel safari into the dunes, and to get a taste of remote (tourism-influenced) Berber life. The local population is mix of Arabs and Berber, and generally welcoming and friendly.

From Marrakech, drive East to Erfoud (2 days drive, stop for the night in or near Ouarzazate). From Fez, drive South to Erfoud (1 day). From Erfoud, continue South 14 km (11 miles) to Rissani, carry on through the village and follow the road Southeast for 40 km (24 miles) to Merzouga. In recent years, the road to Merzouga has been asphalted and also to Taouz, a southern military border town (foreigners cannot cross here). The short access roads (1 or 2 km long) from the main road to the hotels alongside the sand dunes are normally not asphalted, but well maintained. There is now an asphalt road to Hassi Lybed, a smaller village about 4 km before Merzouga.

If you're continuing on to one of the small villages nearby, such as Hassi Labied, the usual tourist price is a fairly steep 50 dirhams (total, not per person) for the short 5 km drive. Beware that overnight busses may sometimes arrive more than an hour early, putting you in Merzouga before sunrise. If this happens, you may find yourself with no cabs available, so be prepared to wait for someone to arrive.

The only way to get around Merzouga is on foot. It's fairly small and easily walkable, but you'll likely want to avoid the midday heat. Sunrise/sunset over the dunes. Folk dances and black G'naui music. Visits to villages near Merzouga inhabited by Senegalese musicians and dancers such as Khamlia can be arranged with some guides, ask at your hotel.

The village is known for its proximity to Erg Chebbi, an erg and it is for this reason a part of the itineraries of many tourists visiting Morocco. It has been described as "a desert theme park", and the Erg Chebbi as "a wonderland of sand". Merzouga has the largest natural underground body of water in Morocco.

When a wealthy family refused hospitality to a poor woman and her son, God was offended and buried them under the mounds of sand called Erg Chebbi. So goes the legend of the dunes rising majestically above the twin villages of Merzouga and Hassi Labied, which for many travellers fulfil Morocco's promise as a dream desert destination. Merzouga is a small Moroccan town in the Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border. It’s known as a gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of sand dunes north of town. West of Merzouga, Dayet Srji is a seasonal salt lake that’s often dry in summer. When full, it attracts a wide range of migratory and desert birds, including desert warblers, Egyptian nightjars and, occasionally, flamingos.
