Eric and I took the plunge and went with a hired guide from the border at Ceuta, rode for about 30 minutes in an antique unmetered taxi, and arrived in the old part of Tétouan. The tour showed us some of the architecture dating back up to 800 years, the city skyline, an overly eager Moroccan carpet salesman, a leather tannery, and an authentic Moroccan market.

Tétouan is historically considered one of the more tourist unfriendly cities in Morocco. This doesn't mean that the people there are unfriendly towards tourists rather most tourist opt for the more obvious choices such as Tangier, Fes, and Casablanca. The king was in residence during our stay there, so the police presence seemed to keep things in check. It's definitely not a trip for the unadventurous, but you'll have a good story to tell when you're back home!

Please be careful with the guides at the border. They are NOT official. Agree on prices beforehand, as they will almost certainly increase by the end of your tour. Some amount of bartering is expected. Just be assertive and don't let anyone pressure you into buying anything you don't want. Be prepared to say "La!" 100 times at any carpet shop you enter.

Le service du petit déjeuner débutant aux alentours de 08h00, nous avons décidé de nous levés tôt le matin pour effectuer la visite de la ville de Tétouan. Nous mangerons à notre retour au riad.

J'avais planifié un petit circuit pédestre qui nous mènerait à différents attraits dans la ville.

Nous nous sommes d'abord rendus sur la Place Hassan II. C'est le lieu le plus fréquenté de cette ville. C'est à cet endroit que se trouve l'ancien palais royal du khalifat de Tétouan.

Tous les bâtiments entourant cette esplanade sont d'un blanc épuré et d'une extrême élégance. Plusieurs palmiers longiformes agrémentent le paysage.

Le Cinéma Espagnol se trouve à proximité de la Place Hassan II. Dans ce secteur, les bâtiments sont d'une beauté exceptionnelle. Les façades des édifices sont ornés de balcons finement sculptés.

Nous avons déambulé dans les ruelles de la médina (classée au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco) pour nous rendre à la Place El Feddan.

La Place El Feddan a été inaugurée en juillet 2016. C'est un site vraiment exceptionnel et d'une grande beauté. Le sol est parsemé de belles mosaïques et la vue panoramique sur les collines où se dressent fièrement des centaines et des centaines de résidences d'un blanc immaculé est vraiment sensationnelle.

La Place Moulay El Medhi est également une des places principales de la ville de Tétouan. Une belle fontaine aux jeux d'eau sied au centre de la place. Elle est activée en soirée.

C'est à cet endroit que se trouve l'Église de Tétouan. Elle est facilement repérable car c'est le seul bâtiment coloré du secteur. Elle est vraiment éclatante au lever du soleil.

Nous avons fait également un petit détour pour aller voir la Grande Mosquée. Nous ne sommes évidemment pas entrés à l'intérieur, mais la vue de l'extérieur valait bien ce petit déplacement.

Nous sommes retournés ensuite dans la médina et avons parcouru quelques ruelles. Comme il était encore très tôt le matin, les boutiques étaient fermées. Cependant, les marchands commençait tout doucement à ouvrir les portes et étaler leurs marchandises.

De retour au riad, le petit déjeuner nous a été servi: jus d'orange frais, café, crêpes, pain, confiture, miel, huile d'olive et olives.

Tétouan (Arabic: تطوان‎, Berber languages: ⵜⵉⵟⵟⴰⵡⵉⵏ, French: Tétouan, Spanish: Tetuán) (nicknamed the White Dove - Arabic: الحمامة البيضاء)[2] is a city located in northern Morocco. It lies along the Martil Valley and is one of the two major ports of Morocco on the Mediterranean Sea, a few miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar, and about 60 km (40 mi) E.S.E. of Tangier. In the 2014 Moroccan census the city recorded a population of 380,787 inhabitants.[1] It is part of the administrative division Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.

The city has witnessed many development cycles spanning over more than 2000 years. The first settlements discovered a few miles outside of the modern city limits belonged to Mauretanian Berbers and date back to the 3rd century BC. A century later Phoenicians traded there and after them the site -known now as the ancient town of Tamuda- became a Roman colony under Emperor Augustus.[3][4]

In late 13th century, the Berber Marinids started by building a casbah and mosque in what is now the old city. Soon after, in 1305, the scale of the settlement was expanded by sultan Abu Thabit Amir who fortified the place.[5] Around early 15th century the Castilians destroyed in retaliation for piracy.

The modern history of the city starts around late 15th century. It was re-built and fortified by Ali al-Mandri who emigrated from the Andalusian city of Granada in the decade before it fell in the hands of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile during the Spanish Reconquista of 1492. Thousands of Muslims and Jews from Andalusia settled in the north of Morocco in general and on the ruins of the city of Tétouan.[6] The city has known a prosperous period of reconstruction and growth in various fields and became a center for the reception of Andalusian civilization. It is often linked to Granada and is labelled Granada's daughter[7][8] and some families still keep keys belonging to their old homes in Granada.[6] It is also nicknamed "Pequeña Jerusalén" (Little Jerusalem) by Sephardi Jews.[9][10] The vast majority of the population are Muslims and small Christian and Jewish communities also exist[11] although their presence has declined sharply in recent decades.

In 1913, Tétouan became the capital of the Spanish protectorate of Morocco, which was governed by the Jalifa (Moroccan prince serving as Viceroy for the Sultan), and the Spanish "Alto Comisario" accredited to him. It remained such a capital until 1956, when Morocco regained its full independence.

Tétouan is a renowned multicultural center.[12] The medina of Tétouan is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.[13] It has also been part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the area of Crafts and Folk Art since 2017.[14][15]

We went to another Medina and did some shopping, we saw inside a tannery, had lunch and got hennas! I was allergic to the henna haha, don’t get one if it’s not natural henna. Then we went to the beach to end the day :)
