The city fell to local tribes around 285 and was never retaken by Rome because of its remoteness and indefensibility on the south-western border of the Roman Empire. It continued to be inhabited for at least another 700 years, first as a Latinised Christian community, then as an early Islamic settlement. In the late 8th century it became the seat of Idris ibn Abdallah, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and the state of Morocco.

Morocco's most impressive and atmospheric ancient site is the roman city of Volubilis. From the Riad Fellousia in Meknes we grabbed a filling breakfast and headed out of town. The riad can arrange a special taxi to see the ruins as well as the nearby town of Moulay Idriss, home to Morocco's most venerated saint. Originally a Carthaginian trading post in the 3rd century BC, Volubilis gradually became distant Roman base in the 1st century AD and marked the farthest extent of the Imperial road. It had been continuously inhabited for over 2000 years until the Lisbon earthquake severely damaged the site and Moulay Ismail's dismantling of the city's marble to use the Imperial City in Meknes. Situated in some of the most fertile plains in North Africa, Volubilis provided Rome with a substantial supply of wheat and olives.

Not the best day for exploring the ruins of Volubilis from the 3rd century B.C. Rainy and Windy. Volubilis was an important Roman town with stunning mosaiacs (the rain brought out the intense colors), a vomitorium (I kid you not), along with other fun and "unusual relics" that you'll just have to watch the video to learn about.

Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved Roman ruins in northern Africa. An easy stop on the route between Meknes and Fes/Fez and worth seeing.

Volubilis (Arabic: وليلي‎ Walīlī) is a partly excavated Roman city in Morocco situated near Meknes between Fes and Rabat. Built in a fertile agricultural area, it was developed from the 3rd century BCE onwards as a Phoenician (and later Carthaginian) settlement. It grew rapidly under Roman rule from the 1st century CE onwards and expanded to cover about 40 hectares (100 acres) with a 2.6 km (1.6 mi) circuit of walls. The city gained a number of major public buildings in the 2nd century, including a basilica, temple and triumphal arch. Its prosperity, which was derived principally from olive growing, prompted the construction of many fine town-houses with large mosaic floors.

After breakfast, we drove to Fez. Along the way, stop to explore the Heritage Site of Volubilis, the once-bustling city and Africanadministrative center of the Roman Empire. The site also has vestiges of the Berber civilization that took the city from Rome in AD 270. We continued to Meknes and view the Bab Mansour gate, beautifully patterned with zellij mosaics. Very nice and traditional Moroccan tajine was tasted at a local Fez family home. Next day we visited the Bab Boujloud, or "Blue Gate" and visit the famed Al-Bou Inania Madrasa. At old town medina, we had an opportunity to look around Moroccan carpets and stop at the Chouara Tannery to see how leather is cut and dyed using traditional techniques. At the Nejjarine Museum, browse the collection of wooden arts and crafts, then view copper craftsmen at work in Seffarine Square. During the tour the e Karaouine Mosque and University, the oldest continuously functioning university in the world, founded in the year 859 were visited.
After lunch in the medina, we visited the Jewish Quarter and mellah, built in 1438. By the end of the walk, we were at the King's Palace.

Le plus important site Romain du Maroc, Volubilis est aujourd’hui jalousement gardée et attire plusieurs centaines de milliers de visiteurs par an. Mais ça n''a pas toujours été le cas : Volubilis; cité Romaine entre 42 et 285 ans après Jésus Christ a été au cours de ce siècle plusieurs fois pillée et dégradée.

The Mauritanian capital, founded in the 3rd century B.C., became an important outpost of the Roman Empire and was graced with many fine buildings. Extensive remains of these survive in the archaeological site, located in a fertile agricultural area. Volubilis was later briefly to become the capital of Idris I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who is buried at nearby Moulay Idris.

@Discover the World --- Volubilis is an ancient Roman colonial city in Morocco, situated at an altitude of 1300 feet (400 meters), between Fes and Rabat, not far from the city of Meknes (about 18 miles, or 29 km). It was developed from the 3rd Century BC onwards as a Phoenician, and later Carthaginian, settlement, built in a fertile agricultural area. It is one of the most important Roman sites in north Africa. The excavations revealed glorious temples and a basilica, gates, aqueduct, baths, various tools and superb mosaic floors.

The Arch of Caracalla, was erected in AD 217 by the city’s Governor Marcus Aurelius Sebastenus, in honor of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Caracalla and his mother, Julia Domna.

The city of Volubilis was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Visible from the nearby holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoune, and from higher points throughout the valley, Volubilis is one of Morocco’s best-preserved Roman ruins located between the Imperial Cities of Fez and Meknes on a fertile plain surrounded by wheat fields. Established before the Christian Era, at a time when the area was part of Mauretania, Volubilis was considered the administrative center of the kingdom of Mauretania and also one of the most remote cities within the Roman Empire, located in the far southwestern region.
