Our Morocco Tour continues with our jroad trip to Ait Ben Haddou, a village, also known as “Ksar” in the Quarzazate region of Morocco. I believe that Ait Benhaddou is one of those secret places in Morocco that is a “must-see” as it is stunningly beautiful and a Unesco World Heritage site.

Ait Ben Haddou is located along the southern border of the High Atlas mountains, a place that you will hear about in every Morocco Travel Guide. Ait Benhaddou, a walled fortress also known as a Ksar, has been used as a film location for famous movies and TV shows such as Game of Thrones, the Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Prince of Persia, Son of God, Queen of the Desert, and many more.

RIAD in Ait ben Haddou we stayed at:
Maison d'hôtes Dar El Haja
Ait Benhaddou, 45122
Morocco

A 10 hour road trip in Morocco from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou. IT WAS WILD. The road was blocked from construction work, diggers were throwing rocks down, the roads were unclear and snakes were casually chillin' on the side. We also stopped by Ounila Valley, took a walk around Ksar Ait Benhaddou and tried to ask an unwelcome guest to leave our hotel room...

The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou - Morocco

#morocco #aitbenhaddou #andy1803
Ait Ben Haddou is certainly one of the most famous attractions of the entire Morocco. Located in the Ouarzazate district, on the southern slopes of High Atlas, this settlement is well known for the Ksar, a fortified village well protected by defensive walls and towers. Houses inside the fortification are crowded together. Some of them are similar to little castle with their own towers and gates. Inside the settlement just narrow alleys, mostly with stairs, to climb over the hill. There is not space enough for cars or barrows. The only way to move around the Ksar is walking or riding a donkey.
The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a well preserved example of earthen architecture of the pre-Saharan regions of Morocco. The site is an UNESCO world heritage.

A part from its architectural and historical value, Ait Ben Haddou is a magic place. Since your first steps in the valley, crossing the river on sandbags means diving into the past centuries. Camels feed just out of the fortified walls. The wind and the river play their music in the air. Walking along the stairs from the bottom of the village upwards is a full immersion into rural life of Berbers people. And, at the end of the walk, You’ll reach the flat top of the hill where a spectacular 360 degrees view will surprise you. The Ounila Valley is in front of you and the Atlas Mountains covered by snow behind.

This site is also famous as a perfect location of several movies production (the Gladiator, i.e.) and I am sure that, after one day spent inside the Ksar, breathing its epic atmosphere, you’ll understand why.
To those who love photography, I suggest to stay overnight (there are several nice hotels in Ait Ben Haddou) to be on site at sunset when sun grazing light hits the walls of the buildings and makes colors so brilliant.

This video has been filmed with an Olympus Om-D Em5 MKII mirrorless camera and the little Eken H8R action cam. Photos have been shot with a Nikon D3100 by Francesca Sparatore.
Music track is “Arabian Fallnight” by Douglas Maxwell and is from YouTube Library.
Post-production with Cyberlink PowerDirector 15.

Heading out into the desert, we crossed over the Atlas Mountains and made our way to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO sight and Ksar of Morocco. Ait Ben Haddou is one of the most well known sites in the country and it truly was a VERY cool experience!
We also visited the valley of 1001 Kasbah's and toured through one of the older Kasbah's that has taken several generations to be fully built... with the latest generation continuing to expand it!
Later, we made our way closer to the Sahara desert and stayed overnight in the Dades Valley, just outside of Ouarzazate.

Check back in a few days as we dive deeper into Morocco and the beauty of this country!

Travel to Aït Benhaddou, Morocco. Aït Benhaddou is a ‘fortified city’ situated along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, used to carry salt across the Sahara Desert and bring back gold, ivory and slaves. It is situated on a hill along the Ouarzazate River and boasts some beautiful examples of kasbahs, some of which remain inhabited.

Aït Benhaddou was Granted UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1987, the site had been the setting for many films including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Mummy and Alexander. The views of the High Atlas are stunning and it is easy to see why this city has been as popular as a film set over the years, dramatic and picturesque.
