Morocco: COP22 officially opens in Marrakesh

President of COP21 and French Ecology Minister Segolene Royal opened the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations on Climate Change (COP22) in Marrakesh, Monday.

In her opening speech, Royal pointed out that the COP22 will be an "African COP," noting that climate justice is "our priority."

President of COP21 and French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy (French): "Distinguished delegates, ladies and gentlemen, I have the honour to declare the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) open."

Segolene Royal, President of COP21 and French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy (French): "The wealthiest countries live as if they are three planets; the poorest live as if there is none left. Therefore, I would again demand climate justice, in particular for Africa. That is the greatest challenge ahead of the COP22. The COP22 is an African [Conference of Parties] COP. That is our priority."
