Thousands of Moroccans answered the rallying call of pro-Palestine NGO groups by holding a mass demonstration in Rabat on Sunday, to condemn the decision of US President Donald Trump to formally recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Demonstrators were seen desecrating Israeli and US flags in a show of solidarity with Palestinians.

The demonstration was organised by two NGOs, namely the National Group for Palestine and the Moroccan Association for the Support of the Palestinian Cause, who called for a "one million" person march through Rabat.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump shifted changed decades of US foreign policy in the Middle East by recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The decision sparked immediate outrage and fury from the Arab world, including from Morocco's King Mohammed VI, who expressed his “deep concern” over the announcement.

The status of the Holy City is a key issue in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
